The story behind

Ganesh Chaturthi 2020 Date in India Calendar

According to mythology, Ganeshji was created by the goddess Parvati with sandal paste which she used for her bath. Being the deity of power, she evoked Ganesh with such force that even the greatest of gods could not confront him in war. During such a war between the gods, Lord Shiva accidentally cut off Ganesha's head which sparked Parvati's rage. To satisfy his wife, Lord Shiva and the other gods fixed the head of a baby elephant on the trunk of Ganesha. This is why Lord Ganesha with the head of an elephant was created. On this auspicious day of Ganesh Chaturthi, Lord Shiva declared that Ganesha will be the only deity who will be worshiped before any other God. He would always be worshiped as a symbol of knowledge, wisdom and strength.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2020 rituals
Ganeshotsav is the largest festival in Maharashtra. Different types of statues of Lord Ganesha are made of clay and color for this festival.

Worship begins with the priest chanting mantras to invoke life in the idol and the Lord is bathed in sandalwood paste and kumkum. This is called "pranapratistha".

Different tributes are offered to the lord, including the traditional “modak” which is a conical candy made of coconut and jaggery. Other things like coconut, jaggery, durva (a special type of three-blade herb) and red flowers are also used for puja.

Traditionally, 21 modaks and 21 durvas are essential for puja.

On the 11th day, the idols are said goodbye by plunging them into the water. This "visharjan" is preceded by the last rites of adoration of the divinity with coconuts and flowers; this is usually associated with long processions and a huge crowd.

In Andhra Pradesh, along with the usual clay idols of Ganesha, turmeric and plaster of Paris are also used to make idols which are then worshiped alongside. Special sweet dishes are prepared for the puja. Kudumu is the local version of "modak" out there; other items include panakam (a spicy drink flavored with cardamom), vadapappu (soaked lentils) and chalividi (a preparation of sweet rice)

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha. The festival is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi and Ganeshotsav. According to the Hindu calendar, it is celebrated on the fourth day of the bright half of Bhadrapad. During the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, idols are made in large numbers. These are usually made of clay or metal of all sizes; some of them even measure 20 feet. People buy gods from Lord Ganesha and put them in their homes and worship them for one to ten days. After that, the deities majestically came out, through the streets and are immersed in a river, sea or well (especially in Maharashtra). Cultural festivals are also organized with main features such as classical music and dance performances, folk dances, poetry recitations and film festivals.

It is not known when Ganesh Chaturthi was first celebrated. History records the festival celebrated in Pune as a public event during the reign of Shivaji, the founder of the Maratha Empire in 1630-80. From 1749 to 1818, the Peshwas encouraged celebrations in Pune. With the fall of the Peshwas, the Ganesh Chaturthi festival lost its support from the state and became a private family celebration until its renewal by Lokmanya Tilak. In 1893, Lokmanya Tilak transformed the family festival into a big public event. It popularized Ganesh Chaturthi as a major festival in order to bridge the gap between different castes and generate patriotic zeal among people against British rule.

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with enormous enthusiasm in most parts of the country, particularly in Maharashtra and in parts of South India. Preparations begin two to three months before the festival. The idols of Ganesha are prepared by skilled craftsmen and are decorated and painted wonderfully. These statues vary in size and are installed in houses and special temporary erected structures called Mandapas or Pandals in each locality. These Pandals are decorated with items such as lights, garlands of flowers, etc. Some of the decorations are based on themes.

The priest is then called to invoke life in the statue by chanting mantras and performing rituals. The deity of Lord Ganesha is worshiped for ten days and on the eleventh day, the statue is taken in procession through the streets escorted with a fanfare of songs and dances. He is finally immersed in the sea or a river symbolizing a ritual in which Lord Ganesha makes a journey to his home, taking with him the troubles of his faithful. This ritual is known as Ganesh Visarjan in Marathi, Ganesha Visarjane in Kannada and Vinayaka Nimajjanam or Vinayaka Nimarjana in Telugu.

The festival is also celebrated with various cultural activities, theatrical performances, community activities such as free medical camps, charities for the poor, etc. Ganesh Chaturthi has become an important economic event. Many industries, businesses and artists survive this mega event as it provides them with an excellent stage for presenting their art to the community.
